John Paul Getty III, who had his ear sliced off by kidnappers, has died in England following a prolonged illness, a statement from his son revealed.
The 54-year-old Getty suffered a narcotics-induced stroke in 1981 that left him paralyzed and nearly blind, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.
His death occurred Saturday at his estate in Buckinghamshire.
The grandson of billionaire J. Paul Getty Sr., young John Paul III spent much of his childhood with his divorced mother in Italy.
He disappeared on July 10, 1973 at the age of 16 following a late night out, Britain's Independent reported.
